the b-6 shearling flying jacket was officially introduced by the us army air forces on june 12, 1939, as a lighter alternative to the legendary b-3. made from approximately 6mm thick sheepskin, it was designed to bridge the gap between the relatively lightweight a-2 leather jacket and the considerably warmer, but also bulkier, b-3.

the b-6 was particularly popular among fighter pilots in the pre-war and early war years. fighter aircraft of the time often lacked heating, making proper insulation essential. in the confined space of a fighter cockpit, the less bulky construction of the b-6 proved to be a significant advantage.

the b-6 also stands apart from other historical shearling flight jackets in its distinctive cut. the slightly longer body with a gently flared hem provides additional protection for the lower back, while side zippers allow the fit to be adjusted – closer when standing, more relaxed when seated. the characteristic bi-swing back offers greater freedom of movement, while two side-entry pockets complete the thoughtful, functional design.
